ACHE
for Jim
You on the hood of your baby-blue Firebird.
You on the phone saying "too soon"
how quickly it became
too late. You putting my photos
in a drawer. You not answering
my calls. You that dream I wake from,
the few minutes I believe
it's real, and all the moments
after, when I know it's not. You
that boat sailing away
just as I arrive panting on shore.
You the kiss I turned from, and each
stone in my cathedral of regret. You the hero
rushing into a burning
building the smoldering
embers hours later, still you.
A new life folded into suitcases and hidden
under a marriage bed, you are the suitcases.
You are the water stain on motel room walls.
You are the secrets I vowed
never to tell, then do. You are the dying
leaves and I am the ground waiting beneath them.
