Apathy
What do you do
when your wife wants to
leave and you just don’t care
anymore
It’s not that you shouldn’t care
she’s done nothing to harm you
it’s just that you don't
Everything else has won
the things she used to take from you
aren't there to take
The job has won
the rent has won
the car payment
the mortgage you didn’t get
won
You’ve been beaten
The drinking doesn’t
make you beautiful like it used to
and don’t fool yourself, kid,
it used to
Daniel Crocker is the author of two books of poetry--People Everyday and Other Poems and Long Live the 2 of Spades, as well as two books of fiction--The Cornstalk Man and Do Not Look Directly Into Me. In his youth, he was a gambler and a theif.
