Blake Lynch

Winter Melt Issue 2009

The Lowdown

I'll love you past Rome, Raleigh
and all those postcard towns.
More than grits and the moon.
A lot like a discount motel bed
on an August night in Memphis.
Wrestled to safety by some angel.
and free from blackjack hustlers,
who carry guns in guitar cases.
I'll love you in the dust of Sixty Six.
or that drunk tank in Manhattan
with all the luck of "Blue Train"
and "Thunder Road" jumbled
just right on the radio waves.
I love you enough to one day
take the green flowered dress
left lying on the wooden chair,
and charge twenty dollars to visit
like a hundred foot Bigfoot statue
I saw one night in Texarkana
Enough to sit drinking Mint Julips
in a shotgun shack selling
t-shirts of your forest fire hair.

Robert Ford Is Chased By His Doppelganger Behind a Magnolia Tree

He spun the barrel and it danced for a minute
like the mad horse I rode out of Pilate City.

Maybe because I spent all summer sleeping
with his favorite whore along the Matamoras

or how I chased him through twelve towns
to square off like scorpions loose from their cage,

but all I know is right before his arm turned
out to be a tree branch and I picked my flask

up from the mud, I knew for certain I would die
so decided I would never fall in love.
