Traci Brimhall

Siren

Singing is lonely,
but it’s what we do
to see the faces of sailors
change. They fall in love
with our throats and want
to give us everything,
to let us lick the tattoos
on their shoulders,
pluck their chest hairs
with our teeth.

This island is lonely
until we hear the splinter
and crack of a shipwreck
and run to the shore
to collect their wet bodies,
those smiling faces
of men who never suspected
that death would sound
so much like music,
that love would taste
like drowning
.
